RED LIGHT THERAPY BENEFITS
Red light stimulates collagen production, which is key to keeping skin firm and smooth. The treatment’s anti-inflammatory properties can also improve a number of common skin conditions, from reducing the itchiness of eczema and psoriasis to minimising the appearance of rosacea and healing inflammatory acne.
By stimulating energy production within the cells’ mitochondria, red light gives your body’s cells the power to reverse damage. Combined with enhanced collagen production, this results in a visible reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.
Red light is a safe, natural way to accelerate the healing process for burns, wounds, surgery incisions, and scars. The wavelengths stimulate cellular renewal and actively replace scarring with healthy tissue. It’s also an excellent treatment for reducing cellulite and fading stretch marks.
Red and near-infrared light have a soothing effect on the body. They stimulate the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin, and regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, resetting the mood and encouraging a good night’s sleep.
Potent red light photons stimulate the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) - the energy molecule that powers all cellular activity in the body. This increase in activity helps to improve muscle strength and endurance for a noticeable shift in physical performance.
The treatment also helps the mitochondria in muscular cells to complete their respiration cycle more efficiently, resulting in less muscle fatigue. Improved mitochondrial respiration leads to better activation and formation of the muscle stem cells that eventually develop into healthy muscle tissue.
Increased cellular activity helps to lower inflammation and stress. By targeting inflamed areas with red light, cells can regenerate more effectively, reducing inflammation in the tissue, joints, and even organs.
Red light increases blood flow to stimulate the body’s natural self-healing power, helping to speed up your recovery process after exercise. It’s also great for use before workouts to increase muscle strength.
Red light helps reduce inflammation and normalise joint biology and function by increasing ATP production in joint cells. This can have a profound effect on those with osteoarthritis or other joint conditions.
Red light increases blood flow to damaged tissues, reducing swelling, inflammation, and pain associated with temporary or chronic conditions. It also helps flush out the lymphatic system to promote full-body detoxification.
This advanced light treatment aids blood flow, increases oxygen levels, and pushes out toxins to improve overall circulation and accelerate nutrient delivery to your body’s tissues.
Undergoing red light therapy helps to enhance overall health and energy levels. Studies have shown that red light boosts serotonin and dopamine levels, regulating mood, reducing lethargy, and even alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Red Light Therapy FAQ
How Does Red Light Therapy Work?
Red light therapy stimulates mitochondria to boost ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, helping cells to function more effectively. This increased cellular capacity helps to repair damaged tissues, reduce inflammation, increase collagen production, and improve circulation.
How Long is a Red Light Session and How Often Should I Book?
Our red light sessions are 15 minutes long. Consistency is key! Depending on your personal goals, we recommend booking three to six sessions per week, giving yourself at least one day off.
How Long Will it Take to See Results from Red Light?
The timeline for noticeable results varies for each person, depending on factors such as age, skin type, and the condition treated. Some may notice improvements after just a few sessions, while others may require several weeks or months of consistent therapy.
Is Red Light Therapy Safe?
Yes, red light therapy is generally considered to be safe. When used in a responsible, controlled environment, red light exposure has no known side effects. The treatment is non-toxic and non-invasive and will not cause burning or premature skin ageing.
Who Can't Use Red Light Therapy?
Red light treatments are safe for most people; however, red light exposure may exacerbate certain health conditions. These include, but are not limited to:
- Photosensitivity and Light Sensitivity
- Epilepsy
- Thyroid Disorders and Hyperthyroidism
- Heart Disease
- Genetic Eye Conditions
- Certain Cancers
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
- Recent burns, wounds, or infections
- Severe bleeding or blood loss
- Botox, breast implants, or metal body implants
If you have any concerns, consult a medical professional before booking a treatment.
Should You Wear Eye Protection for Red Light Therapy?
Yes! You should wear eye protection during red light treatments. We provide free eye protection for all of our red light customers.
Do You Wear Clothes During Red Light Treatment?
What you wear for your treatment is entirely up to you. Remember that the red light can only be absorbed by your skin when fully exposed, so ensure that any area you want to treat is uncovered.
If you want to feel the full-body effects, then you’re free to wear underwear or be nude for the treatment.
All beds are in private rooms, so you can undress and relax comfortably.
Should I Put Anything on My Skin Before Treatment?
Before treatment, you should clean your skin with a gentle, non-drying cleanser to remove any mineral-based sunscreen or makeup containing zinc. If you wish to enhance your treatment, we stock a range of red light lotions that perfectly prep the skin for light exposure and help to enhance the treatment’s benefits.
Can I Have a UV Tan While Using Red Light?
Absolutely! You can continue to tan while using red light therapy. Some evidence even suggests that the improved circulation from red light can produce a better tan, so we often recommend undergoing red light before booking in for UV tanning.
Please note that this hasn’t been scientifically proven.
How Old Do I Need to Be to Use a Red Light Bed?
You must be 16 years or older to have red light therapy at The Tanning Shop in Ireland. We operate a Challenge 21 policy, so please be prepared to show photo ID as proof of age.
